Not really trees but it was planting...
Sometimes when you day-dream about something for years, when the time comes, it isn't quite as good as you imagine it. I know that the day I get to take to the stage with the Foo-Fighters, my windmill guitar moves won't be as wild as I have imagined. It will be great, but not quite as the dream.
Occasionally though, stuff does work out as you hoped. Today was one of those days. I had planned to plant some daffodils as you walk into the field. I know thad daffodils isn't a wild woodland thing, but it is nice right - and I want it to be nice. In 50 years time when I am nothing but a skeleton under some of the trees, nature can decide if the daffs belong or not, but for now, they belong. I am over-ruling nature in the short term.
On this basis, I ordered myself some "bulk" bulbs. How many is enough? How much qualifies as bulk ? I went for 25kg. If I had too many, I could always give some away, too few, order some more. £44.39 well spent (including delivery).
Jeez, when they arrived though, it looked like a LOT of bulbs. So, am alarm call was raised on Facebook. Planters wanted! The only reward would be (hopefully) future pleasure at seeing them all flower - and biscuits.
Cue lots of lovely friends, giving up their Saturday morning to come and dig (in covid-safe isolation from each other).
Good teamwork ladies... |
All done and enjoying the "not view". |
So, having daydreamed (or day dreamt) about owning some land and friends all coming out to help me plant it, it actually happened just as I imagined. There is so much pleasure to come for me in the next few years, planting and watching and enjoying what happens. The pleasure will be accentuated so much by sharing it. Thanks guys for sharing this with me. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do as time passes. I am a lucky chap (again).
I’m planting a woodland in Cambridgeshire and I understand what you mean about “amounts” - it is hard to wrap your head around scaling from an allotment to several acres!
ReplyDeleteI love the idea of daffodils, though! Picking mine up next weekend!
definitely, the scale that everything arrives in is intimidating sometimes (40tons of road planings being the worst - I have used about 20% of it so far). Is fun though, doing things on a big scale. It has made me think, if I could persuade a corporate to sponsor an even bigger one, I would do it without a seconds thought (though I may chance my mind after a winter of tree planting, lets see).
